Grand Canyon Motor Trips

People come on motor trips with us in the Grand Canyon because they want the comfort and security of a larger motorized raft, a personal group size, and more time in the Canyon for exploration.

A motor trip is a wonderful way to experience the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon on an 8-day or a 10-day whitewater rafting adventure. Arizona Raft Adventures and Grand Canyon Discovery take a lot of pride in producing what we believe is the best motor trip available in the Grand Canyon at any price. Our motor trips are perfect for people who want the sense of security and comfort of a larger raft, more time in the Canyon for exploration and a moderate group size.

Not only are our rafts roomier than other commercial motor trips in the Grand Canyon, most of our trips are comprised of one boat that is held to around 13 passengers. We also have several two boat trips with a maximum of 22 guests. On either a one boat trip or a two boat trip, our group sizes are smaller than most other motor outfitters. In addition, your group will remain together the entire trip without the interruption of other guests leaving or joining the trip at exchange points. This means you get more personal attention from our guides and bonding with new friends is natural and easy in this setting. Finally, Arizona Raft Adventures pioneered the use of quiet, four stroke engines, and the motors are just big enough to steer our 32-34 foot long rafts. Our custom designed boat is comfortable and still offers excitement through the rapids.

You see 225 miles of the Colorado River, from the "put-in" location at Lee's Ferry to the "take-out" location at Diamond Creek. On an 8-day and a 10-day trip, the pace allows plenty of time to adjust to group needs. One day we might enjoy an early camp, another day we spend more time hiking and playing up side streams and canyons. Side hikes are optional; however, we encourage you to come along as some of the most spectacular scenery in the Grand Canyon is up the side canyons.

We also run motor trips for specialty groups. If you are interested in photography, you may like to sign up to participate in a photography workshop through Arizona Highways (contact directly 888.790.7042). If you are looking for a kayak adventure through the Canyon, contact Otter Bar Kayak School (contact directly 530.462.4772).

Motorized Specialty Trips
10-Day Photography Trip with Arizona Highways: AZRA's subsidiary Grand Canyon Discovery and Arizona Highways combine resources to present a fabulous photo workshop on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. This trip is perfect for individuals looking to focus their river adventure around photographing some of the most beautiful scenery in the Southwest. Our skilled river guides know just how to cater to photo trips and will take care of your needs so you can concentrate on your photographic pursuits. Camps, side hikes and daily stops are all picked to best fit their proximity to photo opportunities for you to pursue your love of photography and express your creative side. Contact Friends of Arizona Highways toll-free at (888) 790-7042 to book or to inquire about their next workshop.
8-Day Elder Hostel Trip with Northern Arizona University: If you are 55+, you may be interested in joining the N.A.U Elder Hostel trip. Contact Elder Hostel at (928)523-2359 for additional information.
10-Day Natural History Discovery: All of our trips have varying levels of natural history interpretation but this trip is designed for the natural history enthusiast! Join us for a more relaxed paced 10-day trip with experienced crew and a regional expert as you explore and learn with special emphasis on the natural history of the Grand Canyon. Topics include geology, ecology, origins, botany, archeology, climate and environmental impact of the Glen Canyon Dam. Strategically placed during the month of April, the Natural History Discovery trip also sets you up for the best potential wildflower season (though still dependent on if we have a wet winter). Finally, in addition to the complimentary Grand Canyon river guide provided, you will receive three additional Grand Canyon guidebooks.
15-Day Motor/Kayak with Otter Bar: This trip offers complete raft support for kayakers. Kayakers must have solid Class 3+ paddling skills and a bomb-proof river roll. Guides will advise you and help you pick your lines; however, this is not an instructional trip. Non-kayakers are welcomed and may ride in one of the motorized support rafts. Contact Otter Bar Kayak School directly at (530)462-4772 to book or inquire about their next adventure.

This is the premier trip for people of all ages who haven’t the time for a two week trip, and may not be able or don’t want to hike in or out of the Canyon. Experience the full diversity and excitement of the entire Grand Canyon, all at a relaxed pace and with a small group. Our motor trips are also ideally suited for special interest groups such as family reunions to professional seminars.

Trip Specifics

*On certain occasions your trip may end on Lake Mead. Although rare, in the case of severe flooding on Diamond Creek road (the road we have to travel down to pick you up at Diamond Creek), we will have to take you all the way to Lake Mead. You will still return to Flagstaff that day but it will be late in the evening.
